Under a Rainbow Sky

April 29, 2022

Bring on the Nugg nostalgia!

For this week’s trip down memory lane, let’s take a look at the history behind the classic 1982-1993 Denver Nuggetsrainbow skyline” design!
It was the early ‘80s. The team had been facing some uncertainty, and drooping attendance. Carl Scheer, general manager of the Nuggets, wanted to make a fresh start, so he decided to hold a logo redesign contest for fans. When the entries came in, the winner was obvious.
Denver’s skyline organized into arcade blocks, set against the Rocky Mountains and a rainbow sky – it was a perfect reflection of the young, fun energy of Denver in the ‘80s. On top of being truly unique, the rainbow skyline was a banner for some of the best Nugg moments and players in history.
It was the era of Alex English, who alongside Kiki Vandeweghe drove Denver to lead the league in scoring, both averaging over 25 points per game. The impressive pair led the team to the Western Conference finals mid-decade. The Nuggets also saw the likes of Fat Lever, power forward Calvin Natt and center Wayne Cooper pass through.
The whole ‘80s decade was full of impressive wins for the Nuggets – all played out under, and made memorable by, that rainbow sky.
