The Iron Bowl is a college football rivalry game between the Auburn University Tigers and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, both located in Alabama and charter members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The series began in 1893 and is considered one of the most important football rivalries in American sports. It was traditionally played on Thanksgiving weekend, but was moved to the week before Thanksgiving in 1993 to give the teams a bye for a potential SEC Championship Game berth. However, the conference later disallowed any team from having a bye before the league championship game and returned the game to its traditional Thanksgiving weekend spot. The game was played for many years at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, which was known for its industrial production of pig iron, coke, coal, and steel. The term "Iron Bowl" came to represent the rivalry, which was coined by Auburn Coach Ralph "Shug" Jordan in 1964. Alabama leads the series 49-37-1 and has a winning record against every Southeastern Conference team. Authentic work of art ©2023 Vintage Brand.
