The University borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa, also known as the Hawkeye State. Herky was first drawn as a cartoon in 1948, and was first portrayed at a football game in 1959. Herky came to life as the Iowa mascot with a black leather head and gold felt feathers. Since then, Herky has become a familiar figure at intercollegiate athletic events of all types on the UI campus. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighting Squadron.
