This game was played October 19th, 1968 at Veterans Memorial Stadium between the Long Beach State and University of California. The University of California won the matchup by a final score of 42-21. The Long Beach State Prospector Pete mascot and statue, formally named “The Forty-Niner Man,” evolved from the creation of the campus in 1949 and founding President Pete Peterson’s reference to having “struck the gold of education” by establishing the college. Prospector Pete was replaced in 2018 by “Elbee the Shark.”
