It is an element that has officially and unofficially changed over 10 times throughout Marquette’s years, transitioning from Indians to monsters and, finally, to a Golden Eagle. In 1954, the student senate announced Marquette’s newest mascot: the Warrior. First, it related to the university’s namesake Rev. Jacques Marquette, who had a relationship with Native Americans — as guides and students — through his travels, and there was a Native American on the university seal. It also fit in with the many other sports teams in Milwaukee around the time, like the baseball team the Milwaukee Braves, the basketball team the Milwaukee Hawks, and the football team the Milwaukee Chiefs. The first mascot representing the Warriors was Chief White Buck. The University prided itself on having a history that went hand in hand with Indian lore. They also chose the Native American Warrior over other types of warriors, such as the Spartan or the Amazon because it not only honored Father Marquette, but it honored the first inhabitants of the United States.
