The University of Maryland's men's basketball team, also known as the Terrapins, competes in Division I of the NCAA. They were previously a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference but left in 2014 to join the Big Ten Conference. Under the leadership of coach Gary Williams from 1989 to 2011, the Terrapins experienced their greatest success, including two consecutive Final Fours in 2001 and 2002, resulting in the 2002 NCAA National Championship. As of the 2022-23 season, Maryland has competed in 100 seasons, with an overall record of 1,641–1,086. The Terrapins have participated in 30 NCAA tournaments and won their conference tournament 4 times. The team's current coach is Kevin Willard. Maryland played in what is considered to be one of the best college basketball games ever, the championship game of the 1974 ACC men's basketball tournament against eventual national champion North Carolina State. Although the Terrapins lost 103–100 in overtime, the game played a crucial role in expanding the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship and allowing for at-large bids and the inclusion of more than one team per conference.
