First appearing in 1974, Herbie Husker is the most enduring of all Husker mascots. New coach Tom Osborne had taken over the year before, and it seemed time for another image change. Sports Information Director Don Bryant commissioned for the creation of a new mascot after seeing a cartoon by artist Dirk West of Lubbock, Texas, depicting a Nebraska farmer in overalls. Shortly thereafter, Herbie Husker was adopted as the official team symbol. Historically, Herbie is dressed in denim overalls, a red cowboy hat emblazoned with a large N, and an ear of corn in his pocket. Before the 2003 college football season, Herbie's appearance was altered to include a red work shirt, blue jeans, and work boots. Prior to the current day Herbie Husker and Lil' Red, Nebraska cycled through a variety of mascots. Colonel Cobb appeared in the 1940s and 1950s with a corn cob head and green body. Both Husker Man and Colonel Cobb were used throughout the 1960s. Harry Husker, the predecessor to Herbie, was the school's official mascot from 1965 to 1973.
