The basketball team of Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, competes in the NCAA's West Coast Conference. Their home court is the University Credit Union Pavilion, which has a capacity of 3,500, making it one of the smallest gyms in the WCC. The current head coach of the team is Randy Bennett, who has the most wins in the school's history. The Gaels have qualified for the NCAA Tournament twelve times, in the years 1959, 1989, 1997, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023, but have not won any national championships. On March 1, 2013, the team was sanctioned by the NCAA and put on probation for four years due to violations of regulations. The Gaels have two historic rivals, the San Francisco Dons and the Santa Clara Broncos, both of which are Catholic schools located in the San Francisco Bay Area and are members of the WCC. However, they have recently developed a new rivalry with the Gonzaga University Bulldogs of Spokane, Washington, which has become a heated and competitive matchup between the two schools.
