Tulane University's sports teams have undergone several name changes. Before adopting the current nickname, "Green Wave," the official colors of the school, Olive and Blue, were used to refer to the athletic teams from 1893 to 1919. In 1919, the Tulane Weekly, a student newspaper and predecessor of the Tulane Hullabaloo, gave the unofficial nickname of "Greenbacks" to the football team, which eventually led to the nickname "Greenies." However, in 1920, "The Rolling Green Wave," a song published in the Tulane Hullabaloo, became widely popular among the students, leading to the adoption of the "Green Wave" as the official nickname for all Tulane athletic teams.
