1944 UCLA vs. USC Artwork: Cutting Board

This game was played November 25th, 1944 at Los Angeles Coliseum between the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans. The Trojans won the matchup by a final score of 40-13. UCLA's rivalry with USC is unusual in that they are one of a few pairs of Division I FBS programs that share a major city. Both are within the Los Angeles city limits, approximately 10 miles apart. From 1929 until 1982, the two schools also shared the same stadium: the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Each time the two teams met during those years, they both proudly wore their home jerseys as a way to claim ownership of Los Angeles. In 1941, one particular incident greatly contributed to the rivalry. USC students stole the keys to the truck used to transport UCLA’s 295-pound Victory Bell and drove off. The students began a rash of vandalism at UCLA and USC that ended in fall 1942 when kidnapping threats were made to the USC student body president if the bell was not returned. The Trojan students finally agreed to return the bell on the condition that it become a permanent game trophy. The bell has remained a victor’s trophy ever since. The crosstown rivals play each year for city bragging rights and the Victory Bell.
