The school has undergone three name changes since the Texas Legislature awarded El Paso a four-year institution in 1913 known as the "State School of Mines and Metallurgy." In April 1919, the students of the "College of Mines" voted to make the burro the school’s official mascot. Ruth Augur, the school’s registrar, placed the burro in her design for the school’s first seal, a facsimile of which can be found in a floor mosaic located in the old library section Geological Sciences Building. The name changed to Texas Western College in 1949. The university assumed its present title, "The University of Texas at El Paso," in 1967, the year after the men's basketball team won the 1966 NCAA Championship. The UT System Board of Regents officially confirmed the selection of the burro fifty years later in 1970.
