The Wyoming basketball program originated in 1904 when the "Laramie Town Team" challenged the university, marking the team's inception. Led by coach Willard "Dutch" Witte in the 1930s, Wyoming achieved prominence, earning the retroactive 1934 national championship by the Helms Foundation. Under Hall of Fame coach Everett Shelton, the team secured the 1943 NCAA championship, propelled by star guard Ken Sailors, who popularized the jump shot. Wyoming competes in the Mountain West Conference and has made 16 NCAA tournament appearances.
