MOST HISTORICAL CAMPUS

What could be better than watching football? Watching football when it’s played under the supportive gaze of Touchdown Jesus, of course. The Notre Dame campus knows Him as Christ the Teacher, but anyone sitting inside the Stadium will see him framed with his arms upraised and the Saints below covered, looking very much like a solitary football player who just scored a major touchdown. Hence the nickname - “Touchdown Jesus” - which has been lovingly used by millions since 1964. Touchdown Jesus isn’t the only famous sight on Notre Dame’s campus, though - set on 1,250 acres with two lakes are 137 buildings, many with over 100 years of special history and tradition.

GOD, COUNTRY, AND NOTRE DAME

There’s a reason why Notre Dame says that its spirit and academics are a reflection of “a past marked by firsts and faith.” The campus’ historical buildings aren’t just old - each one is different and meaningful its own unique way. Like the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a massive, Gothic-inspired, cross-shaped church featuring the largest collection of 19th century stained-glass windows in the world, a grand setting many alumni return to to get married. Or the Golden Dome on the Main Building, which is topped with a 17-foot tall, 4,000 pound statue of Mary, which has been reguilded ten times strictly by hand. This one might loom largest in the minds of Irish fans, because the bright gold Irish helmets are a reference to it - and of course, because Notre Damers go by the nickname “Domers.”

THE GOLDEN DOMERS

Lucky for the Vintage Brand Team, we got to spend the freezing, windy November day before the game mostly inside, exploring these historic sites - before cheering on the undefeated Irish to a win 42-13 against Florida State alongside Irish fans. And the campus buildings weren’t the only part of Notre Dame’s history that we experienced that day. After hanging out at the small but totally packed tailgate, high-fiving and passing out free koozies to lots of hardcore Irish fans (including one decked out head-to-toe in a green spandex suit); we were honored to meet the 1977 National Championship team, who regaled us with stories about their time at Notre Dame until the game began!
