If you’re a true, orange-blooded Volunteers fan, you’ve probably heard the joke - “sorry, I can’t hear you: ‘Rocky Top’ is playing.” During our tour in 2019, the crowds were less thick than usual for the underdog Volunteers, who started the season 1-3. But as soon as Neyland Stadium filled with those beloved lyrics, “Rocky Top, you’ll always be, home sweet home to me, good ol’ Rocky Top: Rocky Top Tennessee,” the stands filled with song. Underdogs or no, every fan howled along, keeping the Tennessee spirit at full volume - making “Rocky Top” our number one choice for the best gameday tour song.
THE UNDERDOGS THAT NEVER QUIT
There’s simply no other way to put it: the Volunteers were the underdogs that day. Tennessee had started the 2019 season 1-3, and were heading up against the #4 ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Crowds for the Vols were thinner than usual. But that didn’t stop Vols fanatics.
No matter how thick the crowd or how bad the outlook that day, the Tennessee spirit was thunderous, from beginning to end. The Vintage team couldn’t help but join along in singing and dancing. Vols fans were already decked out from head-to-toe in a sea of bright orange. But our team had to do their part and salute these loyal fanatics, spending the whole day running to pass out free koozies of one of our most unique Vintage Vols designs to every excited fan in sight.
ROCKY TOP TENNESSEE
Originally written and released by bluegrass pioneers the Osborne Brothers on Christmas Day in 1967, “Rocky Top” is a song full of country spirit. The Volunteers officially adopted “Rocky Top” as their rally song when it was first performed on the field by the University of Tennessee’s Pride of the Southland Marching Band in 1972. It’s a song that instantly plucks the heart-chords of every Tennessean, and strikes hatred in the breast of their rivals.
